People ask, “Aren’t homes usually finished with wallpaper?” In fact, wallpaper has long been treated almost like the standard wall finish in Korean housing culture. The reason is not simply a matter of taste; it is also tied to the realities of the era when apartments were being built quickly and in large numbers.
한국 아파트는 왜 도배가 익숙했을까요 안녕하세요, 카리페인트입니다. 아파트 현장을 다니다 보면 참 자주 듣는 말이 있어요. ‘원래 집은 도배하는 거 아닌가요?’라는 이야기입니다. 사실 한국 주거 문화에서 도배지는 오랫동안 기본 마감처럼 자리 잡았어요. 이유는 단순히 취향 때문만은 아니고, 아파트가 빠르게 많이 지어지던 시대의 현실과도 연결되어 있습니다. 😊
Fast installation and familiar results: apartments are not one-off homes, but a housing type where the same layout is repeated across dozens or hundreds of units. In that setting, wallpaper was a good way to achieve consistent quality quickly. It also had the advantage of hiding minor unevenness on gypsum board or concrete surfaces to some extent. For sites that had to finish every unit within a short period before move-in, it was a fairly practical choice.
빠른 시공과 익숙한 결과물 아파트는 한 세대만 짓는 공간이 아니라 같은 구조가 수십, 수백 세대 반복되는 주거 형태죠. 이럴 때 도배는 일정한 품질을 빠르게 맞추기 좋은 방식이었습니다. 석고보드나 콘크리트 면에 약간의 단차가 있어도 종이 마감이 어느 정도 가려주는 장점도 있었고요. 입주 전 짧은 기간 안에 전체 세대를 마감해야 하는 현장에서는 꽤 합리적인 선택이었던 셈입니다.
Another reason wallpaper was loved was that it made patterns and textures easy to choose. Once you picked a product, whether it was floral, patterned, silk-like, or fabric-textured, the mood of the space was immediately set. In the past especially, people were less accustomed than they are now to painting interior walls cleanly in broad fields of color. White or ivory-toned wallpaper was seen as the safest choice, and there was a strong perception that it was neutral when buying or selling a home.

But the drawbacks become visible over time. A wallpaper finish looks neat at first, but as people live in the space, it can lift, discolor, or start to separate at the seams. On walls with condensation, mold stains may appear, and in homes with pets or children, scratches and dirt tend to stand out.

Matte paint reflects less light, feels calm, and blends naturally with furniture and lighting.

It is hard to say that one is always better than the other. What matters is the condition of your home’s walls and the way you live. The choice changes depending on whether there is condensation, whether the existing finish is lifting, whether it is a child’s room, or whether it is an area that gets touched often, like a commercial space.
무조건 더 낫다고 보기는 어렵습니다. 짧은 일정, 익숙한 패턴, 비용 부담을 우선한다면 도배가 맞을 수 있고, 오래 볼 색감과 벽면의 정돈된 느낌을 원한다면 도장 마감이 잘 맞을 수 있어요. 중요한 건 우리 집 벽 상태와 생활 방식입니다. 결로가 있는지, 기존 마감이 들떠 있는지, 아이방인지, 상업 공간처럼 손이 많이 닿는 곳인지에 따라 선택이 달라지거든요.
