This 45-pyeong apartment in Heukseok-dong was designed so that all walls and ceilings would be finished in paint, with even the ceiling and baseboard lines cleaned up using negative-detail trim. Even in the photos, the planes and lines run long and continuous, so it was the type of site where even a small uneven step could easily stand out if handled poorly.

흑석동 45평 아파트 올페인트 이번 현장은 45평의 벽과 천장을 모두 페인트로 마감하는 구조였고, 천장과 걸레받이 라인까지 마이너스 몰딩으로 정리되는 현장이었습니다. 사진으로 봐도 면과 선이 길게 이어져서, 작은 단차도 자칫 잘못하면 쉽게 드러나는 타입이었죠.

Especially in a spacious apartment like this, each wall surface is long, and light from the windows and fixtures hits the surfaces in many different ways. That is why paint is a finish where the flatness of the base shows before the color itself. What stood out on this site was that both the ceiling lines and baseboard lines were finished with negative-detail trim. Since the edges are not covered the way they are with ordinary molding, and the actual line where the wall and ceiling meet becomes the finish, the work standards have to be much stricter.

For this project, we applied multiple rounds of putty as the base and then used full-surface putty to even out the planes. Because paint builds up in a thin film, any waviness in the base, joint marks, or irregularities in the existing surface can show through as they are. Full-surface putty is a way of refining the entire plane once more, so the difference becomes very noticeable in spaces where light grazes across the wall. Surface condition is especially obvious on walls beside windows, in long living rooms where sunlight enters diagonally, and on ceilings or walls hit by lighting.

N회 퍼티와 올퍼티 바탕 이번 현장은 기본 여러 회 퍼티를 진행하고 올퍼티로 면을 잡았습니다. 페인트는 도막이 얇게 올라가기 때문에 바탕의 굴곡, 조인트 자국, 기존 면의 요철이 그대로 보일 수 있거든요. 올퍼티는 전체 면을 한 번 더 정리해주는 개념이라, 빛이 벽을 스치듯 들어오는 공간에서 차이가 크게 느껴집니다. 창가 옆 벽이나 햇빛이 사선으로 들어오는 긴 거실, 조명이 들어오는 천정이나 벽은 특히 표면 컨디션이 바로 보입니다.

In the photos, the floor still has the texture of an active construction site, but the wall and ceiling surfaces look calmly refined. That contrast actually makes the level of surface preparation in the paint finish easier to see. We used a full-cover approach, dividing the finish into eggshell sheen for the walls and matte for the ceiling. Since walls are surfaces people touch in daily life, many clients choose a subtle sheen rather than going completely matte. That helps improve durability against scratches and dust. Of course, it does make the work more demanding and increases the cost!

사진에서도 바닥은 아직 공사 중의 질감이 남아 있지만, 벽과 천장 면은 차분하게 정리되어 있는 게 보입니다. 이런 대비가 오히려 페인트 마감의 면 정리 정도를 더 잘 보여주더라구요. 벽 에그쉘광과 천장 무광 마감은 올커버로 진행했고, 벽은 에그쉘광, 천장은 무광으로 나눴습니다. 벽은 생활하면서 손이 닿는 면이라 너무 매트하게만 가기보다 은은한 광감이 있는 쪽을 선택하는 경우가 많아요. 그래야 스크래치, 먼지로부터 내구성이 강해지거든요. 물론, 작업이 까다롭고 비용도 올라가긴 하지만요!

By contrast, matte works well on ceilings because excessive light reflection can make surface waviness more noticeable. Especially on ceilings with many level changes, the difference in sheen helps make the space feel calmer. This Heukseok-dong site had a full range of ceiling drops and various structural elements. From the upper areas by the windows to recessed lighting spots, ceiling access panels, and sections where walls changed direction, it was a structure that required the workers to keep adjusting their reference points within the same space.

반대로 천장은 조명 반사가 과하게 보이면 면의 굴곡이 도드라질 수 있어서 무광이 잘 어울립니다. 특히 단내림이 많은 천장에서는 광 차이가 공간을 더 차분하게 잡아주는 역할을 해요. 단내림과 구조물의 향연 이번 흑석동 현장은 각종 단내림과 다양한 구조물이 많았습니다. 창가 상부, 매립 조명 자리, 천장 점검구 주변, 벽체가 꺾이는 구간까지 한 공간 안에서도 작업자가 계속 기준을 바꿔가며 봐야 하는 구조였어요.

On the other hand, if the surfaces look wavy or the corners are unclear, the overall quality of the renovation can feel disappointing. In high-end interiors, the reason for choosing paint is often felt first in the surface rather than the color. It has a broad, flat-surfaced atmosphere that is different from the patterns or seams wallpaper can create. Of course, that also makes base preparation and site management very important. On a site like this, where negative-detail trim, full-surface putty, eggshell walls, and matte ceilings are all used together, even one small process can affect the final atmosphere.
